African Savanna Plants

African Savanna Plants
Dublin Zoo

We have aimed to plant up this area to represent a savanna in Africa. How can we do that when the climate is so different? Actually it is not so difficult, with the correct plant choice, although not all the plants will be genuinely from savanna areas. Many garden plants are from South Africa, which has a remarkable range of over 23,000 native plants – as a comparison Ireland has only about 1000. South Africa has 600 different Erica - heathers - alone. We have used over 150 different plants within the savanna.

Savannah is grassland, with periodic drought, fire, and regular grazing from often thousands of animals. Low rainfall favours grasses, higher rainfall allows trees to survive too. Occasional fires limit the invasion of tree and shrubs, but very heavy grazing limits the amount of fuel, reduces fires, and allows trees in.
