Rattlesnakes are, of course, the most famous of desert snakes. They are extremely poisonous and are held in well-deserved respect. Pictured above is the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. (USFWS photo by Gary M. Stolz--do not attempt to take pictures like this yourself!)

There are many varieties of rattlesnakes and sidewinders, and many of these venomous snakes are quite different from our common notion of what a rattlesnake looks like, based on the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. See our Pit Viper Gallery for photos and more information.

If you wish to identify a particular specimen, it is advisable to consult a guide such as Amphibians and Reptiles of Western North America by Robert Stebbins. A number of these snakes are pictured on the Reptiles page of the Arizona Ecological Field Services Office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.
