Fermilab's 6800 acres offer many diverse habitats for an ever increasing variety of wildlife. Through restoration and other management practices, the number of these quality habitats is increasing. The mixture of vegetational communities-open fields, deciduous forests, restored prairie, wetlands, and mowed areas-coupled with a large degree of protection from human intrusion, makes the Fermilab site an effective refuge for many species of animals including many mammals and numerous bird species.
