Description The dominant Atlantic and Gulf coast saltmarsh plant.
Height: to 8' (2.4 m) along marsh creeks; 1-2' (0.3-0.6 m) to rear of marshes along upper tidal limits.
Leaves: flat, smooth, tough; to 2' (0.6 m) long, with alternating spikelets.
Flowers: minute greenish-white blossoms in clusters on flowering head. Cluster turns tan as fruit develops.
Flower August.
Habitat Salt marshes, especially along borders of creeks.
