Smooth cordgrass is a perennial, warm-season grass with:
* Smooth, tapered, blade-like leaves that grow to 12 to 16 inches long and one-half an inch wide.
* Round, hollow stems.
* A strong, interconnected root system.
Smooth cordgrass grows in two forms: the short form grows up to 2 feet high, while the tall form grows up to 4 feet high.

Smooth cordgrass grow between the low and high tide lines in open tidal marshes in the middle and lower Bay and its rivers.
