Drive around Washington, D.C., and the phrase â€œpassing gasâ€ takes on a whole new meaning. Researchers who mapped methane concentrations on the streets of the nationâ€™s capital found natural gas leaks everywhere, at concentrations of up to 50 times the normal background levels, they reported here last week at a meeting of the American Physical Society. The leaking gas wastes resources, enhances ozone production, and exacerbates global warming â€” not to mention powering the cityâ€™s infamous exploding manholes.
