Habitat: open coniferous forests of Douglas fir, spruce and pine, mixed woodlands with aspen trees, oak-pinyon woodlands of higher mountains up to 10,000 feet in elevation. Found in lowlands during migration.

Range: breeds from Alaska southward, winters in tropics, rarely wanders east to Atlantic Coast

Diet: insects, fruit, and a few buds
