Common Raven - Natural History Notebooks

Common Raven - Natural History Notebooks
Canadian Museum of Nature

Bold, clever, and inquisitive, this large black bird is well distributed in the northern hemisphere. In Canada the Common Raven is restricted mainly to the more uninhabited areas of the country. It is the emblematic bird of Canada's Yukon Territory.

The Common Raven is omnivorous, but it tends to be a carnivore; its diet embraces a wide variety of animal and vegetable matter, including carrion, small animals and small fruits.

One can distinguish the Common Raven from the American Crow by its pointed tail, its voice (a low "craaw"), and its larger size. Most crow species are about half the weight of the average Common Raven, which is generally 56 to 70 cm (22 to 27 in.) long, and which has a wingspan of about 116 to 118 cm (46 in.).
