A food chain shows how each living thing gets energy from food and passes that along to other specie. Plants make their own food and are the primary producers. Herbivores that eat the plants are primary consumers. Carnivores that eat the herbivores are the secondary consumers. Carnivores that eat other carnivores are tertiary consumers. Decompsers convert dead matter into nutrients that the primary producers can use.
